PMC, PMRDA pass the buck for garbage spot at Hinjawadi

PUNE: Both the Pune Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (PMRDA) and Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) are unwilling to clean up garbage at a particular spot in Hinjawadi.

On Wednesday, residents tweeted that from last one week eateries and markets were throwing garbage on the street behind an IT company at Phase III, Hinjawadi near the fire station. However, both the PMRDA and PMC are not ready to take up the issue on the grounds that the area does not fall in their jurisdiction.

Anshul Gupta, a resident of Metropolis Society and member of Liveable Hinjawadi, said, “The authorities do not have any mechanism to dispose of garbage from new commercial zones. Recently, two new markets and some eateries opened near our society. As they do not have the mechanism to dispose of garbage they have started throwing leftovers and vegetables on the street. From last one week, they have made a garbage spot behind the IT company at Phase III near the fire station.”

Ravindra Sinha, another member of Liveable Hinjawadi, said, “On one hand, the authorities talk of initiatives for Smart City and on the other hand they are ignoring setting up a mechanism for disposing of waste from commercial zones.”

Sanjay Gaikwad from Life Republic Society, said, “Our society is located beside Megapolis. Because of garbage dumping we are facing issues like foul smell, stray dogs and insects. No authority is taking responsibility for it or cleaning it up.”

When contacted, Kiran Gitte, Chief Executive Officer of PMRDA said, “The PMRDA and PMC have set boundaries. Our boundary is till Hinjawadi MIDC management and the rest of the area falls under the PMC.”

When contacted, the PMC Health Officer of the ward, Vinod Bendale, said the PMC limits are till Wakad Chowk and may be the PMRDA is looking after the entire Hinjawadi area. “But now that the issue has come up before me, I will look into it and inform the official concerned to clear the garbage as soon as possible.”
