PUNE: After the recent incidents of major fires in Mumbai, Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) fire department has demanded to give them a separate budget head for their revenue collection and utilise it for developing firefighting infrastructure and services.

Currently, the department deposits its revenue in general head and they are allocated funds through it. The department gets revenue of more than Rs 100 crore from fire service tax, fire premium charges. However, they get allocated around Rs 50 crore every year. The department spends Rs 25 crore on salaries and other expenses. The remaining is insufficient towards improving infrastructure

Department chief Prashant Ranpise said, “According to Maharashtra Fire Protection Act, there should be separate budgetary head for the department and their revenue should be utilised for improving infrastructure of fire service. Based on that, we have put forth a proposal before the standing committee for approval.”
