PMC fails to start pre-monsoon work in many areas of Pune city

Pune: Residents within the jurisdictions of the Dhankawadi, Kondhwa-Wanavdi, Dhole Patil and Nagar Road regional ward offices will have to face many problems during the monsoon, as these regional ward offices have not carried out the crucial pre-monsoon work such as cleaning and repair work of storm water drainage system, nalas flowing through these areas and culverts constructed to prevent water logging.

Shockingly, these ward offices have floated around 20 tenders for carrying out pre-monsoon work when the southwest monsoon has reached the doorstep of the city. The Met office has predicted heavy to very heavy rains.

All the four regional ward offices spread across the city, under the supervision of the civic administration, every year clean and repair the storm water drainage system, culverts and nalas for the smooth flow of rainwater into the river.

But encroachments in large numbers along the nalas flowing through the city are resulting in water logging. Though the PMC had set a deadline of May 31 for carrying out all pre-monsoon work, it failed to adhere to it. In case of Dhankawadi, Kondhwa-Wanavdi, Dhole Patil and Nagar Road ward offices, the pre-monsoon work has been stuck at the initial stage of floating tenders.

The entire tender process and issuing of the work order to bidders will take at least one more month as it required the nod of the Standing Committee and the General Body. It won’t be possible for any contractor to carry out the work during the monsoon.
