PMC to divert funds to scholarships

PUNE: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is facing a shortage of funds for scholarships it offers to meritorious students of Std X and XII every year. Hence, the the Standing Committee has decided to divert funds meant for repairing civic school buildings towards the scholarships.

The scholarship, named after Shardabai Pawar, is meant for civic school students who score 85 per cent in Std X and 80 per cent in Std XII Board examinations. The scholarship amount of Rs 51,000 each is given to eligible students.

While the budgetary provision of Rs 78.2 lakh is made for the current financial year, the PMC needed Rs 94.86 lakh. According to the civic administration, a total of 186 students were eligible under the scheme this year.

The committee approved the civic administration’s proposal to divert funds meant for repair of civic school buildings, mainly for making the roof waterproof, said Yogesh Mulick, Chairperson of the Standing Committee.

The PMC made a provision of Rs 23 lakh for repairs of the civic building, mainly for making the buildings waterproof, of which Rs 16.66 lakh has been diverted for meeting shortage of funds for scholarship and only Rs 6.34 lakh is left for the repair of civic school buildings.

“We were falling short of funds to give all students the scholarships they deserved. So, it was decided to transfer the funds meant for waterproofing internally within our secondary school department, for the benefit of these students. These funds will be used to give scholarships to students,” said Deepak Mali, Education Officer (Secondary and Technical).
