PMC to create three new unique gardens

PUNE: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has planned three new theme gardens - Lily, Rock and Barrier-Free Access gardens in the city this year. There are 191 gardens in the city and 25 of them are developed on different themes.

PMC’s Garden Department is planning to construct ‘Lily flower park’ in Wadgaon Budruk, on the Khadakwasla Irrigation Division land near the canal. They have earmarked around one-acre land for Lily park. The Garden Department said the estimated cost is around Rs 6 crore and it will take around one-and-half-years to be completed.

There are around 100-150 varieties of lilies. The flowers are large, often fragrant, and come in a wide range of colours including white, yellow, orange, pink, red and purple.

In the Rock garden, PMC will use different rocks from different states of the country. The Garden Department will make sculptures from these different types of rocks. The Rock garden will also be located in Wadgaon Budruk near the Khadakwasla canal and will be spread across 1.5 acres of land along the canal.

The Barrier-free garden will be the first of its kind in Pune, which will enable specially-abled persons to access it without difficulty. The PMC has decided to make special provisions for divyang (specially-abled) persons. The garden is planned in Wadgaon Sheri area.

Ashok Ghorpade, Chief Superintendent of PMC Garden Department, said, “With these three gardens, the number of gardens will increase to 194 in the city. Next year, we will plan to reach the 200-mark. New theme based gardens will take around one-and-half-years to complete.”
