PMC conducts surprise checks at 304 abortion centres in city

PUNE: The Health Department of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has conducted surprise checks at 304 abortion centres across the city since April 1.

The checks were aimed at finding discrepancies related to the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act. Around 58 such centres are yet to be checked.

PMC’s Assistant Health Officer Anjali Sabne, who is also in-charge of PCPNDT Act’s implementation in Pune, said that the centres are working as per the act and all relevant information is filled correctly. “The inspection started from April 1 and around 364 centres will be checked. The inspection was expected to end on May 30. However, as many centres were left, the date was extended till May 15,” said Sabne.

The inspection was conducted by five zonal authorities, who checked relevant documents regarding Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP). The centres were checked for permission for centre, documenting MTP medicines, patient registers with information of the patients, secrecy, qualification of the doctor, who performs MTP and hygiene of the centre. Sabne also said that such inspections happen four times in a year.
