PMC to appoint pvt agency to keep mobile toilets clean

Pune: In order to keep the mobile toilets for women clean and increase their use among women extensively, the PMC has decided to deploy a private agency for cleaning these mobile toilets.

There are a total of 12 buses stationed at various crowded places in Pune, but due to lack of cleanliness, most of these mobile toilets are not used by women.

The issue of discarded PMPML buses, converted into mobile toilets for women, lying unused on city roads was raised a couple of months back.

The Solid Waste Management Department of the PMC decided to appoint a private agency to carry out the cleaning work on a regular basis.

The PMC converted 12 discarded PMPML buses into public toilets for women under the Ti (she) initiative, and stationed them on the busy Shimla Office Chowk, JM Road, FC Road, Shaniwar Wada etc, but due to lack of cleanliness, most of these toilets are not used by women.

These toilets are lying unattended, while some of them are locked due to absence of caretakers.

When contacted, PMC’s Solid Waste Management Department Head Suresh Jagtap said the caretakers will be appointed for keeping the mobile toilets
clean and increase the footfall of users.

He said the contractor will allow income generation by selling space for advertising on buses and against that, they will appoint attendants and also keep toilets clean round-the-clock.
