Pimpri Chinchwad to get its own police commissionerate

Mumbai: The State Cabinet on Tuesday approved a new commissionerate for Pimpri-Chinchwad. The site for headquarters has not been selected, but initially the state plans to take a building on lease to set up the headquarters.

At present, Pimpri-Chinchwad comes under the jurisdiction of the Pune police. But as the town is growing fast as an industrial hub and Information Technology (IT) hub, the population is also growing rapidly. Considering this, there was a long pending demand for a separate police commissionerate.

Girish Bapat, Guardian Minister of Pune said, “Some areas under jurisdiction of Pune city police and the rural police will be included in the new commissionerate. Ten police stations from Pune commissionerate and five from Pune rural will be incorporated in this new commissionerate,” Bapat said.

The new commissionerate needs about 4,840 policemen including officers. For this, 2,207 personnel will be transferred from the Pune city and Pune rural police establishments.

Besides, 2,633 new posts will be created for the new commissionerate.

“The recruitment will be done in three phases. In the first phase 60 per cent (1,568) personnel will be recruited, in second phase 20 per cent (552) and the remaining 20 per cent (513) will be recruited in the last phase,” Bapat said.

The Cabinet on Tuesday approved about Rs 500 crore for  setting up the new commissionerate. For the first phase Rs 107.72 crore for salaries and Rs 212.87 crore have been sanctioned for official expenses including construction of staff quarters.

“The government is looking at government land or building on rent for the headquarters within the Pimpri-Chinchwad limits, but we are trying to get a building near the PCMC headquarters,” said Bapat.

“There will be a commissioner and additional commissioner for the new commissionerate and he will be Additional Director General of Police rank,” Bapat said.
