Pune: Alleging that there has been massive corruption in allotting contracts related to the 24/7 water supply scheme, People’s Union Party organised protests on Wednesday outside Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) demanding that the PMC bring out a white paper on the scheme that was started by the civic body some years back.

The activists of the party alleged that there has been massive corruption in the implementation of the scheme and that it has been designed to benefit contractors and private players. The protesters also alleged that the scheme has been an attempt to privatise and corporatise the water supply department of the PMC by giving priority to private interests.

Ramesh Dharmavat of the People’s Union said that the scheme has always been a bogus project and has only resulted in cheating people of Pune and has pushed them into debt. He said that the excuse given by the PMC that it cannot take out a white paper, as it does not have a policy decision regarding the scheme is ridiculous.

Dharmavat alleged that the contracts allotted as part of the scheme for water tanks, water meters, fibre cable ducts and publicity have been given in a suspicious manner and allotted to contractors in favour of those in power. He also said that there was a state-level enquiry committee appointed by the State government and tenders were cancelled and new estimates from fresh tenders show that there will be a saving of Rs 1,000 crore for the PMC. These and other questions make us demand a white paper and the People’s Union will carry out protests until the demand is fulfilled, he said.
