A committee of three officers was appointed to inquire into the corruption charges raised by the opposition parties in the purchase of tarpaulin sheets.

Pimpri: The standing committee of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has decided to withhold payments of the contractor who supplied tarpaulin sheets to PCMC for gifting it to heads of dindis who participated in the annual palkhi procession.

A committee of three officers was appointed to inquire into the corruption charges raised by the opposition parties in the purchase of tarpaulin sheets. In the wake of last year’s experience in which corruption charges were levelled against PCMC, this year, the civic body decided to distribute tarpaulin sheet to each dindi participating in the procession. Since the expenditure for purchase of this tarpaulin sheet is below Rs 25 lakh, the decision for this purchase was taken in commissioner’s discretionary powers.

Even after taking utmost care, opposition Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) levelled corruption charges in this purchase as well.  The NCP alleged that the civic administration has approved tender that quoted excess amount, instead of opting for the lowest bidder. The Shiv Sena also joined the chorus. But the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party denied any corruption in the process as no elected members were involved in the purchase.  Standing committee chairperson Seema Savale said, “Since the issue has been raised by opposition, there is a need to inquire into it.

The contractor has been asked to submit the purchase document including the payment to supplier and VAT challans of the
product. Also, the committee is supposed to explain the reasons for the delay in the tendering process. “The payments to the contractors must be stopped until the decision of inquiry committee is not submitted.”
