Activists alleged that contractors were being paid even when they had not done work properly

Pimpri: The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) will be demanding before and after pictures from the contractors appointed to remove hyacinth before settling their bills. This was announced after it was alleged that the contractor was demanding money for removal of hyacinth when actually it was found to have flowed along with the flood water on its own. Now the Standing Committee of the PCMC has directed the administration to follow a new procedure.

The move followed allegations by a few activists that contractors were being paid even when they had not done their work properly.

During the annual palkhi procession, the contractor claimed to have removed a large amount of hyacinth and garbage from the river. However, it was alleged that the firm showed the photographs of the river site where there was no hyacinth.

Speaking about this, Standing Committee Chairperson Seema Savale said that before making the payment, the officials should cross verify the actual work done by the contractors then only such payments should be made in the future. The proposal was approved with this supplementary.

The proposal for paying Rs 40 lakh to the private firms for removal of hyacinth from Pavana, Indrayani and Mula came up on the agenda of Standing Committee meeting which was held on Wednesday. Former Corporator Maruti Bhapkar had demanded that PCMC should inquire into this matter as hyacinth was not removed from the rivers.
