Pimpri: Following the two incidents of demolition of public toilets in Pimpri Chinchwad, a strange incident of removing a PMPML bus shelter by the civic authority has been undertaken near Mhada Colony in Pimpri on Tuesday night. Commuters who used to wait for buses at this bus shelter were surprised to see bus stop sans bus shelter in the morning.

After inquiring with the PMPML officials, it came to light that Pimpri Chichwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has removed this bus shelter overnight without taking PMPML into confidence. PCMC officials said that the bus shelter was removed as it was not in use and locals demanded to do so. But, the locals told a different story. They said that this shelter was just in front of a new hotel in the vicinity and therefore, it was remove due to vested interests of the hotelier.

The PCMC has provided Rs 2 lakh per bus shelter in the city. The work of the bus shelter is being undertaken by local corporators. 256 such bus shelters have been constructed in the city through this fund. The corporators have constructed these shelters at some places where there is no need of the shelter. However, this particular bus shelter was in use and people needed it.

Deputy Engineer of BRTS Department of PCMC Vijay Bhojane said, “There was demand from the locals to remove the bus shelter. After taking locals into confidence, the shelter was removed.”

Although the bus shelter has been removed overnight, PMPML is in dark about the development. Transport Manager of PMPML Sunil Gavali said, “Before removing the bus shelter, PCMC must consult the transport utility, which has not been followed in this case.”
