PCMC provides Rs 10 lakh accident insurance to each conservancy worker

Pimpri: The conservancy workers of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), who keep the city clean, have been brought under a group accident insurance worth Rs 10 lakh each. The 'Personal Accident Insurance Scheme' has been implemented, thanks to Advocate Sagar Charan of the health department's grievance redressal committee. He pursued this issue with the civic body.

The PCMC has received an award for cleanliness from the government, in which the conservancy workers have played a major role. However, their health and safety issues are ignored by the municipal corporation. Many employees collect garbage without worrying about their personal safety and hygiene. This has resulted in many of these workers suffering serious injuries in accidents. Moreover, they could not afford to take expensive treatment.

Charan was insisting on the insurance cover for the workers and garbage collectors, who work on a contractual basis. The PCMC has implemented the accident insurance from April 1, 2018 for its conservancy workers garbage collectors.

PCMC Labour Welfare Officer Pramod Jagatap said a provision has been made to give job to the kin of a conservancy worker within 30 days in case of the worker's accidental death. Warm clothes and safety gear will be also provided to them.
