Pimpri: An Education Committee, comprising nine corporators as its members, will be formed by the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) soon. The move follows the dissolution of the School Board.

The members will be appointed in the PCMC General Body meeting on April 20. Meanwhile, BJP corporators have started lobbying to secure a seat in the committee. The post of the first chairperson of the Education Committee is also up for grabs.

The School Board was dissolved after its term expired on June 2, 2017. It was decided that a new education committee will be set up in place of the education board. The committee will be formed in accordance with the Municipal Corporation Act.

Therefore, some elected members will get an opportunity to serve as members.

The School Board had 15 members, which were appointed by the General Body. But in the Education Committee, there will be only nine members like other PCMC committees. Since there are 77 members of the BJP, the party will have five members on the new committee. A BJP corporator will hold the post of chairman of the committee.

The NCP, which has 36 corporators, will nominate three of its corporators as members, while the Shiv Sena will nominate one member on the committee. There is competition among corporators to become members of the committee and therefore these corporators are lobbying with their leadership to secure a seat.

“Corporators, who have worked in the field of education, and those who are interested in education, will be given an opportunity to serve as members of the Education Committee,” said Leader of House in PCMC Eknath Pawar.
