Pimpri-Chinchwad’s ranking dropped from 9 to 72 in 2017

Pimpri: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) administration has made cosmetic changes across the city to impress the Central team which will be visiting for Swachha Survekshan 2018.

The civic body is taking precautions to avoid embarrassment like it had faced last year. In 2017, the PCMC’s ranking had dropped to 72. In 2016, its ranking was nine. Due to this free fall, the civic body had to face severe criticism.

As part of the Central government’s Swachh Bharat Mission, it has appointed a Quality Council of India to assess cleanliness efforts in cities and rank them on various parameters.

The PCMC has removed garbage dumped at open spots and put up notice boards warning people against littering. Roads are also being cleaned more often. As the team is supposed to visit the vegetable market in Chinchwadgaon, illegal hawkers have been asked to get their stalls removed for five days. “The officials have told us to get our carts off the roads and threatened to confiscate our carts if we fail to do so,” said a hawker in Chinchwad mandai.

Sandip Khot, zonal officer of Zone B of PCMC, said, “Certain changes have been made in view of the Quality Council of India team’s visit. But these changes will continue in the future. The allegation that cleaning is being done to impress the team is untrue.”
