Corporator Datta Sane said, “Last year, the BJP cornered the NCP over purchase of Vithal-Rukmini idols. But this case shows that corruption is going on in the BJP rule.”

Pimpri: Like last year, corruption charges have been levelled against the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation for palkhi procession preparedness this year as well. This year, the allegations are over purchase of tarpaulin sheets.

Since the expenditure for the purchase is below Rs 25 lakh, the decision was taken under the commissioner’s discretionary powers.

The NCP alleged that the PCMC administration did not approve the lowest bidder. It was joined by the Shiv Sena. But the ruling BJP denied any corruption in the process as no corporators were involved in it. The administration claimed there were only two bidders eligible as per required specifications, out of which the lowest bidder was selected.

The approved cost of each tarpaulin sheet was Rs 3,412. So, the PCMC is spending Rs 22,17,800 for the purchase. NCP leader Mangala Kadam said, “A supplier called Manikchand House quoted Rs 2,400, but he  was rejected and it was given to the contractor who quoted Rs 3,412 for each tarpaulin sheet. This is nothing but corruption.”

Corporator Datta Sane said, “Last year, the BJP cornered the NCP over purchase of Vithal-Rukmini idols. But this case shows that corruption is going on in the BJP rule.”

Contractor Sandip Mali of Manikchand House said, “My bid was purposely termed ineligible as the supplier had been already decided by the authorities. The PCMC has not returned my deposit.”
