Pavana dam receives 686 mm rainfall in June

It is more than four years average rainfall received in the catchment area of dam

Pimpri: The Pavana dam that provides water to Pimpri-Chinchwad, has received 686-millimeter rain in the month of June which is more than four years average rainfall in the catchment area of the dam.

The water level in Pavana dam has been increasing steadily with continuous rain in the last two weeks.

Due to continuous rains for the last two weeks, the water level in the dam has been increased from 20.28 per cent to 33.43 per cent on June 30. Since the catchment area of the dam started receiving good rains the people of the city are eager to know whether the PCMC withdraws 10 per cent water cut that was imposed on citizens as a precautionary measure.

The catchment area of Pavana dam received 129 mm rainfall on Thursday. On Friday till 5 pm 18 mm rainfall has been recorded in the catchment area. So far in June the catchment area of the dam received 686 mm rain. Last year, the Pavana dam received merely 161 mm rainfall till June 30.

Pavana dam has total water storage of 2.846 TMC ft (23.43 per cent) on Friday. This year’s water storage is more than double of the water that remained in the dam on the same day last year.

Deputy Engineer of Irrigation Department VN Mathkari said, “Due to good rains in the catchment area the water level in the dam is increasing steadily. Currently, water has been released from the power generation plant at the rate of 1200 cusecs in the Pavana dam.”
