PUNE: In an amusing incident the customs officers at Pune Airport took nearly 14 hours to extract the gold concealed in the powder form. Apparently, the customs officers at the airport intercepted a lady passenger who arrived from Abu Dhabi by Jet Airways (9W 513) on Thursday morning and recovered six packets of synthetic rubber paste containing gold concealed on her body.
The officers nabbed Rehana Faizan Ahmed Khan, holding Indian Passport number L6052087, a resident of Kurla, Mumbai, with 3,041 grams of 24 K gold valued Rs 98,83,250.
Officials told Sakal Times, “The lady Rehana was in Abu Dhabi for past one-and-a-half-year. When she arrived here our lady officer detained her because of her suspicious movements during the check-up. Rehana had mixed the gold power with turpentine and concealed it on her body even in her undergarments. When our lady officer checked her thoroughly she found that the gold which was mixed with powder and made into a paste.”
“The flight arrived at 4.40 am and at 5 am she was detained. Initially, she was denying that its gold, but later she accepted it. But the process of extraction took around 14 hours and at around 8.30 pm we got the actual weight and value of gold. Even, metal detector failed to identify the paste,” the officer said.
The gold recovered from Rehana was seized under the reason of attempting to be smuggled in India and hence liable for confiscation under provisions of the Customs Act, 1962. In her statement recorded under section 108 of the customs act, 1962, the passenger has admitted possession, carriage, concealment and recovery of the gold under seizure. Rehana Faizal Khan has been arrested and further investigation is in progress.
OPIUM WEIGHING 890 GRAMS SEIZED
One case of narcotics was lodged by the officers of narcotics cell of Pune customs on Wednesday. The opium weighing 890 grams worth Rs 3 lakh (approx) was seized from one person in Camp area. The person has been arrested under the provisions of NDPS Act 1985 and sent for judicial custody. Further investigation, in this case, is in progress.
