Pune: ‘Opulent implants’ for arthritis patients were launched on Thursday by a city-based hospital, which would prevent resurgery required in patients due to wear and tear and loosening of implants after 10 to 15 years. According to doctors, this implant would be most beneficial to young arthritis patients.
Speaking on the occasion, knee replacement surgeon Dr Neeraj Adkar from SaiShree Hospital said that presently the number of young patients having arthritis is growing and hence the need for implant surgeries is also growing.
“In India, the reason for this is growing sedentary lifestyle. The youngest patient whom I have operated was 31 years old from Dhayari. The reason can be mainly the sedentary lifestyles. Many young people in their forties come to us for knee replacement. Usually, knee replacement cases were seen among senior citizens,” said Adkar.
Speaking during a press interaction on Thursday, Dr Carl Becker from Lancaster, United States, who has recently performed an opulent knee surgery, said that the number of young arthritis patients is growing in US as well.
“This is mainly because a lot of young people are opting for sports and practicing just a single sport for many years. This is resulting in higher wear and tear of specific muscles. Hence playing two or more sports is always advisable. Another major reason for growing arthritis among young patients is obesity, which needs to be controlled,” said Becker.
Adding further inputs, Dr Adkar said that for young people, the only option is implants.
“The normal implants wear down after 10-15 years after which there is a re-surgery required for these patients. The opulent implant macroscopically has a Bionik Gold surface. The coating forms an extremely strong bond with the implant. Due to this, re-surgery is not required,” mentioned Dr Adkar.
