Pune:  Popular Marathi author and President of the 89th Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Sammelan, Shripal Sabnis, said that it is only the Congress which can save the nation and democracy now. He was addressing a gathering of Congress party workers at the conference held for Parvati Vidhan Sabha constituency on Tuesday.

“The Congress party is the oldest party and has a long tradition of democratic values. It is the only party in the country right now which will save the nation and its democratic values,” Sabnis said, adding, “If the Congress stays true to the values and legacy of Mahatma Gandhi, the ideology of the Congress will be widely accepted by the masses.”

Speaking at the same programme, former minister and Congress veteran Harshavardhan Patil came down hard on the BJP. “The BJP has gone blind with power. They will suffer the consequences for this in 2019,” Patil said, adding, “The last four years have seen suicides of almost 13,500 farmers. The BJP is insensitive to all of it. No matter how many protests take place, their voice does not reach them.”

“The people of the country are tired of the BJP rule. Whoever speaks against the BJP is being targeted by them. But even Hitler’s dictatorship could not stay long,” Patil said, adding, “Neither could the British stay for long. The BJP is nothing compared to them. If they talk of finishing the Congress, the Congress will make sure it finishes the BJP in the next elections.”

Patil declared that the Congress will not compromise with the NCP on the Pune seat. “Pune is a Congress seat. The constituencies in Pune have always given more votes to the Congress. We have not reached a position that we can’t find a candidate and we will not leave this seat. The party members should work for the party,” he said.
