Officials blamed for waterlogging in PCB

PUNE: The General Body meeting of the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) turned into a mini war-zone with ward members pitted against the officers.

Blaming the officers for waterlogging, the ward members claimed there are no stormwater drains in the entire PCB area.

However, the chief health superintendent stated that stormwater drains are present in almost all areas of Cantonment except for Wanowrie and Ghorpadi.

The waterlogging issue was the highlight of the Pune Cantonment Board General Body meeting held on Wednesday.

Ward members claimed that after the first spell of rains, their areas were waterlogged.

Member representing Ward Number 8, Priyanka Shrigiri, said, “Recently  post rains, there was waterlogging in many parts of the Cantonment.”

Member from Ward 4, Atul Gaikwad, claimed waterlogging incidents are taking place in several areas on MG Road, New Modikhana and other places.

Member representing Ward Number 6, Wanowrie, Vinod Mathurawala, said since there are no stormwater drains in his ward, there were frequent waterlogging incidents which have irked the residents.

Member from Ward Number 7, Ghorpadi, Kiran Mantri alleged that frequent waterlogging in the area had made life miserable.

Chief Health Superintendent Riyaz Shaikh said, “Since there were blockages in some drains, waterlogging incidents did take place in the area. We have cleared the blockages and hope these incidents are not repeated. Soon we will be constructing the stormwater drains in Wanowrie and Ghorpadi.”

Shaikh stated that in all civil areas of the Cantonment, drainage lines have been connected to all houses and lead to 20 MLD STP situated at 900 Bootee Street.

Stormwater drains were constructed three to four years back on roads including Jan Mohammed Street, MG Road, Bootee Street, Blunder Road, Tarapur Road, Kondhwa Road and 4th Cross Road.

The water from these drains goes into Manik nala at Solapur Bazaar.
