Notorious criminal shot at in Pimpri

Pune: Notorious criminal Santosh Ashok Kuravat (33) from Pimpri was shot twice by seven to eight unidentified assailants while he was drinking tea with a friend at a hotel near Sadhu Vaswani Park in Pimpri on Friday.

Pimpri police said the incident occurred at 3.30 pm. They said seven to eight people first attacked Kuravat with sharp weapons and, when he tried to retaliate, they fired five bullets at him, two of which hit him in the back and head.

Pimpri police said the incident occurred at 3.30 pm. They said seven to eight people first attacked Kuravat with sharp weapons and, when he tried to retaliate, they fired five bullets at him, two of which hit him in the back and head. 

Kuravat was admitted to a private hospital near Dange Chowk for treatment. The police suspect the attack was a fallout of a past rivalry.

Kuravat is accused in a murder case. He  contested the civic elections and lost. Meanwhile, the investigating team recovered a pistol and two sharp weapons from the spot where Kuravat was attacked.

The incident created panic in the area for some time. Police teams rushed to the spot. Additional Commissioner of Police Shashikant Shinde, Deputy Commissioner of Police Ganesh Shinde and Assistant Commissioner of Police Ram Mandurke visited the crime scene. 

Teams were formed for nabbing the assailants. The Pimpri police were yet to lodge a case at the time of going to press.
