Pune: While the trend of celebrities taking over shows on FM radio seems to be gaining momentum, the radio jockeys (RJs) state that this is not something to worry about. There is no need for the RJs to feel insecure as these programmes are introduced only to increase the popularity and sponsorship of the channels and hardly ever get a slot in the prime time.

While Annu Kapoor’s show on Big FM ‘Suhaana Safar’ began three years ago, and is a huge hit, others like Anu Malik, Karan Johar, Anil Kapoor, have recently hosted shows for several FM radio channels.

“It’s a positive trend,” said Music Jockey (MJ) Sangram.  “I actually feel privileged that Annu Kapoor’s show succeeds my show on the channel. And as he has been a host earlier, he does a fantastic job. On the artistic platforms that we work on, it’s common for people to switch media every now and then. Despite being an MJ, I have also done cameos in Marathi films and written columns in the newspaper. Also, a handful of actors wanting to try their talent at radio wouldn’t really make any RJ insecure. Anyway, it’s the RJs who actually write the script for the celebrities, and all they have to do is present it, which they often do successfully being performers themselves,” Sangram said.

MJ Sunny, former MJ who worked in the radio industry for around 15 years showed another angle, where how the inclusion of celebrities, especially from Bollywood, is beneficial to the celebrities as well as the radio channel.

“Radio Jockeys speak on the radios all day long. This could sometimes be boring, and also repetitive programmes fail to get enough sponsorship. Hence, a few years ago, Radio One where I was working, pioneered into bringing in celebrities to record narrations that could involve stories, facts, thoughts, etc and then broadcast them in the contract period which could range from a month to a couple of years. This helped the radio channels generate revenue, as well as get good sponsorship,” said Sunny.

He further added, “There is absolutely no feeling of insecurity amongst the RJs due to this trend as the celebrities hardly ever have daily shows, and it’s the best RJs of the channel who will always get the prime time shows. Even the famous Annu Kapoor’s show was lifted to the prime time after it was seen gaining popularity amongst listeners. Most other shows run by the celebrities haven’t reached that level of popularity yet.”

He also said that considering the popularity radio still has amongst the public, many celebrities nowadays want to try out the medium. “There are many who find radio to be a great medium to reach out to more people, and hence, they consider doing either a show or a segment on FM channels. Thus, even these artistes are benefitted of their presence on radio, as are the radio jockeys will always be here, whether the celebrities take over a few shows or not, echoed the MJs.’’
