Nodal officer to be appointed to handle incidents of mob lynching

Pune: Following the recent alleged incidents of mob violence and mob lynching in different parts of the country, the State government on Monday released a notification stating the roles and responsibilities of police officials during such incidents.

The notification comes following the directions of the Supreme Court on handling such situations. The notification states that the State Director General of Police should appoint a deputy commissioner of a police-level officer in cities and superintendent-level officer in rural areas as nodal officers, who would be investigating such incidents.

Similarly, an assistant commissioner of a police-level officer will be helping the nodal officer in the investigation of such incidents.

The notification stated that the appointed nodal officer should work in tandem with the local intelligence branch of each police station. Similarly, police officials should collect information related to suspected people involved in spreading fake messages of communal hatred. Police officials have also been directed to collect information of local goons involved in sharing provocative messages. Police officials should also patrol religiously in sensitive areas.

The appointed nodal officers will conduct regular meetings with police inspectors and police officials of the intelligence wing to collect such information. Police officials have been asked to file first information report in such incidents and share the same with nodal officers.

The notification also states that protection should be given to the victim and his family in such incidents and if police officials are found acting in a negligent way, they will face stern actions.
