No outside candidate for LS seat, urge city Cong leaders

PUNE: Pune city Congress leaders met AICC secretary in charge for Western Maharashtra Sonal Patel and demanded that outside candidate should not be selected to contest elections from Pune Lok sabha constituency.

Party leaders have not disclosed the name of the aspirant, but there is a growing discussion in party circles that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supported Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Kakade may be considered as the party’s candidate.

On Tuesday, Patel conducted a meeting of all booth committee members, workers and party leaders against the background of forthcoming Lok Sabha election. During this meeting, party leaders who are aspirants for Pune seat, told Patel that an outside candidate should not be considered for this seat.  However, Patel has not given any assurance but said that she has taken a note of aspirants’ demand.

When asked, Ramesh Bagwe, City unit chief of Congress Party, said, “ It was a scheduled meeting to take a review and interact with party workers and members of booth committees.” However, he refused to comment on the demand of party workers.

Congress parliamentary committee has already shortlisted three names i.e. Mohan Joshi, Abhay Chhajed and Arvind Shinde. However, they are under the impression that the party may give ticket to Kakade.

Earlier, there was unrest in BJP party due to Kakade declaring himself as the candidate for city Lok Sabha from BJP. Now, he has openly demanded that Congress should give him a ticket for city Lok Sabha seat and this caused unrest in Congress workers.
