Pimpri: Residents of Pimpri-Chinchwad owning a property in the city have got a big relief as there will be no hike in property tax for one year.
According to the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act, it is mandatory for civic bodies to decide the rate of property tax before or on February 20 every year. However, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) General Body, which was held on Tuesday, adjourned without taking any decision on the proposed tax revision due to the aggressive stand of opposition parties over new water tariff rates. Hence, current property tax rates will continue to be the same for the coming financial year.
Municipal Commissioner Shravan Hardikar put forward the proposals to revise property tax and water tax in the coming financial year before the General Body meeting. In it, the water supply benefit tax for residential properties was increased from 4 to 8 per cent, water benefit tax for non residential properties has been proposed to increase from 5 per cent to up to 10 per cent.
Speaking about this, Municipal Commissioner Shravan Hardikar said, “When any new tax is to be imposed on taxpayers, the proposal for the same must be approved before February 20. However, if the proposal is approved after this date, then it cannot be applied to tax payers in the current financial year.”
