NGT appoints Justice UD Salvi as acting Chairperson

Pune: National Green Tribunal (NGT) Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar retired on December 19 from the post after completing a five-year tenure. Justice Umesh Dattatraya Salvi took charge as the acting Chairperson of NGT. Salvi's tenure will end on February 13, 2018. 

Justice Salvi was enrolled as an advocate in 1977. He was appointed as City Civil and Additional Sessions Judge, Mumbai in August 1993. Elevated as Judge at the Bombay High Court on February 10, 2009, Justice Salvi was appointed a Judicial Member of the NGT on February 14, 2013. 

Under the National Green Tribunal Act for effective and speedy disposal of cases relating to environmental protection and conservation of forests and other natural resources, NGT was established on October 18, 2010. The head office is located in New Delhi while its zonal divisions are in Bhopal, Pune, Kolkata and Chennai and its circuit divisions are in Shimla, Shillong, Jodhpur and Kochi.

According to the records of Pune division, there are 496 pending cases till date and the disposed cases of November are 82.
