Pune: City-based social organisation Sajag Nagrik Manch has organised a seminar on the topic 'What is the real purpose behind forming the Tree Authority of the Pune Municipal Corporation? Is it meant for rehabilitating party workers or environment conservation'. The seminar will be held at 5 pm on Sunday at IMDR Hall on BMCC Road.

The 15-member Tree Authority comprises seven elected corporators and seven NGO members having expert knowledge about botany, agriculture, horticulture, etc. The municipal commissioner is its head. The Tree Authority is supposed to take decisions about tree cutting in such a way that the green cover of the city should not shrink and at the same time, development work should not be affected.

The seminar follows the recent National Green Tribunal (NGT) judgement on scrapping the Tree Authority and ordering the PMC to appoint seven expert members on it for taking right decisions for the conservation of the green cover in the city. Green activist Vinod Jain and former assistant municipal commissioner Bhanudas Mane have agreed to participate in the seminar, which is open to all.
