The new terminal building is much awaited by the fliers and airlines. According to sources, “The process of construction of a new terminal building is underway. But the foundation stone laying ceremony will not be done till the Union ministers come to Pune. The MP also requested Union Minister of Road, Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitaraman and Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha to attend the ceremony. However, they have not yet confirmed that they will be present. Due to this, the ceremony is pending.”

The construction of the terminal building spread over 42,000 sq metres, has a budget of Rs 400 crore. A project management consultant was appointed in May 2017 and tendering work for the new integrated terminal building is in process. It will take 24 months to complete the project. EGIS India was appointed consultant and presented the final design of the building which was approved by the AAI in May.

The sources said, “Union Minister Nitin Gadkari played a vital role to hand over the land from Defence to AAI. The process was done after the BJP came to power. The actual process was to start from 2016 and within two-and-half years the land was handed over to the AAI. The design and contract was also given in this year.”
