New panel to decide on chicken slaughter

Pune: The Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) has decided to set up a health committee to decide whether the slaughtering of chicken should be continued at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Market or the chicken shops should provide packed chicken to the customers.

Due to the slaughtering of chicken taking place in the Chhatrapati Shivaji Market, there has been the blockage and choking in the drains with feathers and blood and other waste material coming from the drains which are directly connected to the sewage treatment plant (STP) at 900 Bootee Street.

Priyanka Shrigiri, Vice President of PCB, said, “It has been almost decided that the slaughtering will be stopped soon and it will only take place at the butcher house situated in Lulla Nagar because there have been problems faced by vegetable vendors due to the presence of chicken and meat shops in the market,”

“A health committee will be set up to take a review on this issue and decide whether packed chicken should be provided to the customers or the chicken should be slaughtered at the butcher house situated in Lulla Nagar and then sell at the market,” Shrigiri added.
