Pune: Passengers travelling by AC compartments in trains can look forward to a cleaner journey, thanks to the new mechanised laundry to be set up soon at Ghorpardi by the Pune Railway Division.
Milind Deouskar, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Pune, said, “The land has been already provided in Ghorpadi. The laundry will start by next year. It will function on the principle of Build Own Operate Transport (BOOT), where cleanliness of the linen will be done only for trains owned by the Pune railway division.”
Earlier, bed sheets, pillow covers, blankets and towels were cleaned by a private contractor in Talegaon. “The railways have decided to start its own laundry. The laundry will be under Pune division’s supervision. The clothes will be cleaned by the Swiss technique,” he said.
Around 15-20 trains depart from the Pune station, which are operated by the Pune railway division. Jhelum Express, Pune-Howrah Duronto and Pune-Patna are among the trains where the demand of linens is very high.
This is in line with the policy of the Railway Board which wants to mechanise the laundry process in trains across the country.
Indian Railways have been battling the issue of providing clean linen to its AC passengers for years. A report by the Comptroller and Auditor General that was tabled in Parliament in June 2017, had rapped Indian Railways for dirty linen in its trains and said it violated all guidelines.
The Railway Board has instructed that washing of linen (except blankets) should be done after every single use and blankets be dry cleaned every two months but it was not done in most places, it said.
It also called for better storage facilities for washed linen and need to introduce mechanised laundry system. Deouskar said that the Pune railway division is focusing on passengers’ safety.
