Pune: The demolition of the maternity ward in the premises of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Cantonment General Hospital in Khadki started a week ago. In the next week, the construction of the maternity ward will start. The ward will be ready for use in the next eight to nine months. Earlier, the maternity ward was of 5,000 sq ft. Now, it will be of 10,000 sq ft.

Dr Ranjeet Bhosale, Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of the hospital said, “Now, the maternity ward will get 20 beds in total and there will be four private rooms. The ward will be divided into three wards for pregnant women who are admitted, operated women and post-delivery women.”

The ward building had become old and dilapidated and the patients were scared that the facility could fall anytime. Thus the work was taken up by the Khadki Cantonment Board (KCB). The tender amount is 2 crore. Dr Bhosale added, “Till the new maternity ward is ready, the women patients have been shifted to another ward which was empty.”

Dr Bhosale said, “We have purchased three types of machinery including fetal non-stress, baby warmer and incubator. We have to purchase three labour tables and the existing labour tables could be used to examine patients. The ward will be in a single complex.”
