Pune: The elected members of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) have decided to scrap the penalty levied on property tax for owners of small illegal properties. They also decided to double the fine on unauthorised constructions measuring above 600 sq ft.

There are numerous illegal constructions in the city. The municipal corporation collects property tax from them by charging some fine. The PMC issues them written instructions that there will be no change in their legal status by paying property tax. They are supposed to pay the tax for using facilities such as roads, water and others.

Earlier, the PMC used to charge three times more fine to illegal properties, which was quite high. The State government asked the civic body to decrease it. In this backdrop, the corporators approved the new fine structure for illegal constructions.

The general body of the PMC has now decided to exempt small constructions up to 600 sq ft from the fine. However, owners of these properties will have to pay property tax as usual.

Property tax department head Suhas Mapari said the new fine structure has come into effect from April 1 of this year.
