PUNE : “There is an urgent need to use renewable energy which is required to switch to a low carbon economy and sustainable development that includes careful preservation of water and food supply system. This should act as a bridge on biodiversity, soil health and human health as priorities,” said Defense Technologist and Green Tech Adviser Prof Amitav Mallik, during a session on ‘Climate Change: Facts and Hopes’ organised by Nagrik Chetana Manch recently.
“Human civilisation needs a global political will to make a conscious transition to adopt a life which is in tandem with nature,” he said.
Mallik emphasised on the need of reducing the dependence on fossil fuel and the use of technology to remove carbon.
“Future is no longer compatible with the dependence on fossil fuel or by exploiting nature today, as the race for Gross Domestic Produce (GDP) is increasing but we are not understanding that it is only the root of all the problems,” he said.
“We have to reduce our dependence on fossil fuel. Carbon sink capacity, which trees do naturally, will have to be increased and we can also use technology to remove extra carbon,” added Mallik. He also emphasised on using technological innovation for reducing carbon content.
He said, “There are technological innovation for 24X7 abundant clean power as well as carbon capture and removing excess carbon dioxide from the air which already exists. It is no longer expensive but our mindset also needs to be changed.”
