NCP blames BJP, while locals angry with PMC

PUNE: NCP senior leader Ajit Pawar, who visited the spot on Thursday evening, attacked BJP leader and District Guardian Minister Girish Bapat for allegedly ignoring the repair work of the canal. 

Meanwhile, Mayor Mukta Tilak and PMC officials had to face the anger of slum dwellers. Tilak visited the spot after the incident, however, local residents gheraoed her and blamed PMC for ignoring the repair work.

NCP Leader Ajit Pawar visited Dandekar Pul slum area. Blaming District Guardian Minister Girish Bapat, he said, “Bapat is the chairman of canal committee. He should have taken the canal leakage issue seriously. Now, advanced technology is available to repair the canal.” 

NCP senior corporator Prashant Jagtap said, “During my tenure, we visited the canal from Khadakwasla to Parvati water works. We found water leakages in the canal and we demanded repairs. However, District Guardian Minister Girish Bapat put the onus on PMC to provide Rs 2 crore for repairs as the corporation is taking water from Mutha canal. The PMC General Body meeting disapproved funds for the Irrigation Department.” 

Rajendra Nimbalkar, Additional Municipal Commissioner had to face angry reactions of slum dwellers as women argued with the officials of the civic body. The locals complained about lack of basic infrastructure in this area.

SPECULATIONS ON BREACH
Some residents claim telephone and MSEDCL cable laying work was carried out recently near the canal wall. Due to this work, the canal wall became weak, leading to the disaster. However, a PMC official said the wall was breached due to weakening of its foundation due to rodents.
