Pune: The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) organised a ‘mourning day’ on Sunday for the yet to be constructed flyover at Chandni Chowk which was promised to be completed promptly by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The protest was carried out by the youth wing of the NCP.
The protesters gathered at Chandni Chowk on Sunday and performed the rituals done for a person’s death anniversary. They conducted ‘Shraddha’, a Hindu ritual where food is offered to the soul of the deceased, depicting the bridge as deceased and chanted slogans like ‘Jai Jai Ram Krishna Hari’, ‘Pul Lavkar Kara Gadkari’ (Praise to Lord Ram and Krishnahari, please complete the bridge soon Gadkari).
Kunal Vede Patil, President of Khadakwasla branch of the Rashtrawadi Yuvak Congress, said the protest was held to remind the BJP to keep its promises to the people. “Nine months ago, Nitin Gadkari, the Minister for Road Transport & Highways, performed the groundbreaking ceremony bridge and promised to begin the construction work in a month’s time,” He said, adding, “It has been nine months and even the initial steps haven’t been taken.”
Patil said, “The government has not completed the land acquisition process yet. They have not been able to procure the required land. In a recent visit to Pune, Gadkari expressed concern and unhappiness with the delay in the work. The government should fulfil the promises it makes or else the people will know that it was just a poll gimmick.”
