Muslims to hold silent protest march against illegal madrasas

Pune: A silent protest march against illegal madrasas will be organised on August 3 from Hazrat Babajan Dargah to Police Commissioner’s Office in Camp. Few days back, a maulana of an orphanage-cum-madrasa on Katraj-Kondhwa road was arrested for allegedly sexually abusing several minor boys.

A petition regarding the march was submitted to Pune city police on Monday. “There are about 60-65 illegal madrasas in Pune, where children are brought from Bihar, Bengal, Assam, Uttar Pradesh. They are bought and sold. The agents and maulanas, who indulge in child trafficking, must be punished after thorough enquiry. Also medical tests of all children studying in all madarasas should be done. There is a madrasa in Kondhwa for girls, which is also illegal. Therefore, strict action should be taken against those, who have made running a madrasa a business,” the petition states.

The march will start at 3 pm from Babajan Dargah. People will march via MG Road and garland Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar’s statue before ending the march at Police Commissioner’s Office.

The petition was submitted to the Pune police special branch on Monday by Iqbal Mehmood Ansari, Mushtaq Ahmad Shaikh, Ahmad Yunus Sayyed, and Aman Ullah Khan.
