Muslim women protest against triple talaq bill

Pimpri: Hundreds of Muslim women protested at Dr Ambedkar Chowk in Pimpri on Saturday to demand ‘recall’ of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, which proposes sanctions against the practice of triple talaq among Muslims.

The bill was passed in the Lok Sabha in December 2017. The rally was part of an all India protest called by the All India Personal Law Board (AIMPLB).

“Our demand is clear. The government must call back the triple talaq bill, as it interferes in religious matters of Islam. The government has no business to interfere in Muslim personal law,” said Iqbal Usmani.

The rally in Pimpri-Chinchwad was called by Muslim Mahila Kriti Samiti, Pimpri Chinchwad. The rally started at Latifia Mosque in Milindnagar, Pimpri, and ended at Babasaheb Ambedkar Memorial, where a public meeting was held.

Activists Najima Sheikh, Ahera Iqbal Naik, Tabssum Jainuddin Sheikh and hundreds of women were present for the protest.
