Pune: Maritime Research Centre (MRC), in collaboration with Savitribai Phule Pune University, Goa University and Vijnana Bharati, has organised a six-week project-based internship ‘Underwater Domain Awareness (UDA) Summer School.’
The internship supports the ‘Safety And Growth for All in the Region’ (SAGAR) vision of the government for ensuring safe, secure and sustainable growth in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
“The maritime push by the government as part of the SAGAR vision will provide massive opportunities for young India. However, the adequate human resource development will remain a big challenge. This six-week internship programme is designed for under/postgraduate students undergoing multi-disciplinary programmes to bridge this HR gap,” informed Dr (Cdr) Arnab Das, Director, Maritime Research Centre and convener of the UDA Summer School.
The participants will be able to take the work forward to their BTech/MTech projects. Acoustics and geophysics mechanical engineering, communication and signal processing, law, basic science, strategic policy making, marine biodiversity are few of the topics, which will be conducted in the Summer School Internship Programme. On successful completion, certificates will be awarded to participants with special mention of research and industry exposure.
Students will also get the opportunity to interact with domain experts from the marine sector and related fields. There is a two-week field visit to Goa planned, as part of the internship, where the participants will visit National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research (NCAOR), Marine Science Department at Goa University, marine industries and also take part in a short research cruise. MRC was founded in February 2017 under the aegis of the IMF.
IMF also has a special dedicated museum and library on maritime. MRC can also help in providing infrastructure for research and data collection, tackle acoustic habitat degradation and huge entrepreneurship opportunities for young India.
