Pune: A 40-year-old mother donated her kidney to her 22-year-old son at Sassoon General Hospital recently. This was the fifth kidney transplant and the second successful live kidney transplant at the hospital.
The young boy had ectopic kidney which is a birth defect: The kidney is located in an abnormal position. The ectopic kidney may create urinary problems such as urine blockage, infection or urinary stones.
The donor is a mother of two. The recipient has a younger brother.
Their father is a daily wage labourer and mother a housewife.
The recipient had one ectopic kidney and the other was non-functional. He underwent three dialysis sessions before the transplant.
The doctors noted that the family was not financially well off and could not afford the transplant at a private hospital.
“On Thursday, the transplant was successfully done. The family is from a small village in Nanded district. He has been suffering from kidney disorders for last seven years. He was initially diagnosed with failed kidneys during a health camp near his village. He and his family have come a very long way for the surgery,” said Dr Ajay Chandanwale, Dean of BJ General Medical College (BJGMC) which is attached to SGH.
The team which conducted the surgery includes Dr Suresh Patankar, Dr Abhay Sadare, Dr Niranjan Ambekar, Dr Sachin Bhujbal, Dr Amit Bhangale, Dr Harish Tatiya, Anesthesiast Dr Maya Jamkar, Dr Yogesh Gawali and others.
