'Moshi depot fire may be due to heat generated at dump'

Pimpri: A major fire broke out at Moshi garbage depot around 8 pm on Thursday. Four fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the fire. But even after 22 hours, the fire could not be brought under control. 

Although, the cause for the fire is yet to be confirmed, an official said that it could be the result of heat that is generated in garbage dump due to fermentation of garbage coupled with the high temperature during the day. Residents living around the garbage dump, especially Dudulgaon, Charholi and part of Alandi Road, were engulfed with smoke.

The civic body has a garbage dump which is spread over 80 acres in Moshi. The fire broke out on Thursday night which spread within no time to surrounding areas. Multiple fire tenders were rushed to the spot but they failed to douse the fire.

Bhosari MLA Mahesh Landge also rushed to the spot, He said, "The incident of a fire in the garbage depot in Moshi is unfortunate. We are looking for reasons of why such an incident happened. Concerned authorities have been instructed to take precautions to avoid such incidents in the future. Also, the PCMC will speed up the 'Waste to Energy' project. The project will be implemented in two years. Therefore, once this project is completed, such incidents can be avoided."
