Pune: Officials of the City Traffic Police claim to have seen better results after the drive against violators of mandatory helmet rule took off. A random survey by the traffic police on January 4 found that nearly 66.51 per cent of the people were wearing helmets. Traffic police said they took pictures of two-wheeler riders at various signals during peak hours and calculated the percentage of people donning helmets. In the survey, around 1,087 people were present in 22 pictures taken at different police jurisdictions and it was found that 723 two-wheeler riders were wearing helmets.

The jurisdictions which were over 80 pc helmet compliant included Khadak, Samarth, Koregaon Park and Hadapsar. The city traffic police have penalized over 40,000 people in the city for driving two-wheelers without helmets. On an average, Pune sees around 170 to 200 deaths of two-wheeler riders every year. Speaking about the drive, a police inspector in the traffic division said, “We do not have to verify our claim. People can see the results of the drive for themselves. You stand at any traffic signal and calculate the number of people wearing helmets and you will see the result.”
