Modern College gets autonomy

PUNE: Modern Arts, Science and Commerce College, Shivajinagar, has been awarded an autonomous status. Under this, the college will enjoy independence in formulating curriculum, introducing courses and changes in the examination pattern.

The autonomy has been granted for 10 years and will be implemented from the new academic year 2019-2020. The admissions to the first year in the new academic session will be done under this new status.

“The syllabus will change for the first year students. Besides this, new courses will be introduced. They will be certified under both Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) and Modern Arts, Science and Commerce College,” said Progressive Education Society (PES) Chairman Gajanan Ekbote.

“Mostly 10 to 15 per cent of the syllabus, which is currently provided by SPPU, will be modified. Further, new certificate and diploma courses will be introduced. Initially, in the first phase, certificate courses in Life Science, Data Analysis, Fashion Trends and Statistics will be introduced,” Ekbote said.

For the past six months, the college had been preparing for the autonomous status. Soon after they applied for the status, Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) also gave a go-ahead to the college with a No Objection Certificate (NOC). Followed by which, they submitted a proposal to the University Grants Commission (UGC) on March 22.

“One of the bonus points for us was the A+ grade in National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) for the third time, given in 2017,” he added.

“We decided to go for autonomous this year and have received it easily,” said Ekbote. “The college has received a fund of Rs 5 crore from Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA). Besides that, it will receive an amount of Rs 25 lakh from UGC every year,” added Ekbote.

“This will help the college in developing its infrastructure to provide better facilities to students and build modern laboratories,” he further added.

Ekbote also assured that even though the college has become autonomous, it will not hike fees for any course.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
- Formulation of courses as per the global requirements.
- New certificate, diploma and degree courses will be available.
- Independently bringing out question papers and changes in the examination pattern.
- Boost to more research in the college.
