Mob attacks doctors at DY Patil Hospital

Pune: Family members, friends and relatives of a local youth in Pimpri went on a rampage and attacked the doctors and other staff of DY Patil Hospital and research centre after he was declared dead by the hospital authorities on Friday night. Family members accused hospital doctors of negligence while treating their deceased kin.

The deceased youth has been identified as Ketan Gaikwad (26), who was being treated for lung consolidation and was in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital. A mob of around 70-80 people ransacked the hospital and assaulted resident doctors, nurses and other staff.

The mob alleged that Gaikwad didn’t receive proper treatment in ICU and died because of the negligence of doctors. However, doctors flatly denied the allegations.

Doctors said that the mob assaulted seven resident doctors, including two female doctors. One of the doctors sustained injuries on his face, inflicted by a scalpel. The incident occurred inside the ICU, where the resident doctor on duty initiated the procedure to give cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to the concerned patient after his heart stopped. As the procedure required the presence of two relatives, they were called.

However, many people entered the ICU and restrained doctor from giving CPR and started assaulting him.

They also said that though the Pimpri police have registered a case for damaging hospital property, they have not booked the assaulters for attacking the doctors. The doctors also carried out a protest outside the hospital premises in wake of the lackadaisical attitude of the police in registering an FIR against the assaulters.
