Massive rise in number of cybercrimes in city

Pune: The City Police Cyber Crime Cell (CCC) has registered over 110 complaints of credit card cloning and spoofing and over 2,100 cases of debit card and credit card frauds, clearly indicating the massive number of people being cheated through the online mode. The CCC has registered 7 cases in which mobile phones of people were hacked for money transfer. While there has been a rise in the number of people opting for going cashless since demonetisation, the rising cases of online frauds, debit and credit card frauds remain obstacles to the digital economy.

Cyber experts have pointed out that cashless economy will continue to be a distant dream until a holistic approach is taken by the government. Advocate and cyber expert Gaurav Jachak said the government should understand that a majority of the population is in rural areas where they are yet to get electric supply. “The number of fraud cases in the city We must understand that people are still getting used to credit cards and debit cards and so going entirely cashless will take time. With the number of fraud cases, people are scared to go cashless. If people are assured that their money is safe they will be willing to go cashless,” he added. He said there is dire need for changes in Information Technology Act as with the rise in online payment options there have been different frauds associated with it.

“The changes in IT Act should cover all the latest changes in the online world so that people are safe,” added Jachak.

Cyber expert Anil Raj said the number of credit and debit card frauds is disturbing. “Many such frauds are linked to technical knowhow and cyber fraudsters use it to scam people,” he said.

Another reason to worry about is social engineering frauds where fraudsters phish banking details of people and make them penniless in seconds. Clearly there is need of awareness among people regarding cashless economy,” added Raj.
