Marathas, Lingayats extend support to Ambedkar’s stir
Bharip Bahujan Mahasangh plans to gherao Maha Vidhan Sabha in Mumbai today
Pune: Bharip Bahujan Mahasangh, the political front led by Prakash Ambedkar, has planned to gherao the Maharashtra Vidhan Bhavan in Mumbai on Monday for which Maratha, as well as Lingayat groups, have extended their support.
Bharip has organised the gherao to increase pressure for its demand of arresting Manohar (Sambhaji) Bhide, the head of Shivpratishtan, who has been in the news for being the alleged co-conspirator with Milind Ekbote in orchestrating the Bhima-Koregaon attacks in January. While Ekbote remains in police custody, Bhide, in a press conference last week, had demanded that Prakash Ambedkar and others at the Elgar Parishad, should be arrested and brain mapped.
The support extended by the Maratha organisations has come through Shrimant Kokate, who is a controversial historian and orator associated with organisations like Maratha Seva Sangh, Sambhaji Brigade, etc. In a letter of support to the gherao,
Kokate said, “Instead of taking the youth of Maratha community towards higher education and employment, people like Bhide and Ekbote are pushing them into violent incidents like the riots, which took place in Bhima Koregaon.”
“The said persons have misconstrued history and presented a wrong picture of Chattrapati Maharaj before the youth. This has created an atmosphere of hatred and violence in the society,” the letter said, continuing, “These persons have also threatened social activists and intellectuals. The demand to arrest them is in the national interest. We support your demand of arresting them.”
