Pune: A total of 29 persons have been arrested by the Pune rural police in connection with violence in Chakan, about 30 km from here, during Maratha reservation agitation on July 30. The accused include some juveniles, who have been also detained.
Police Inspector Santosh Girigosavi, in-charge of Chakan police station, said, “We have arrested 29 persons till now. Some of them have been remanded to magisterial custody, while others are in police custody.”
When asked about people who made provocative speeches during the agitation, the officer added, “We have analysed the speeches but till now, we have not come across anyone saying go and damage buses, vehicles.”
The police have registered case against 4,000 to 5,000 people. Besides Indian Penal Code sections related to rioting, unlawful, assault, damage to property, the police have also invoked section Highways Act for blocking the highway traffic and National Green Tribunal (NGT) Act for burning tyres.
In the FIR, the police have estimated the loss to property between Rs 8 to 10 crore.
