Man tries to burn wife alive in court premises

Pune: In a shocking incident, a man tried to burn his 22-year-old wife by pouring petrol on her after she refused to withdraw a case against him in connection with triple talaq. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon in the premises of Shivajinagar family court.

The 22-year-old complainant told Sakal Times, “A divorce case is going on with husband Sohail Shaikh from last one-and-a-half years after he sent me a notice saying that he has given me talaq and I should accept it.”

Narrating her ordeal, she said, “I got married in May 2015 and since the beginning, I was regularly harassed by my husband and his family over their demand for gold. I was subjected to beating, mental harassment and was forced into unnatural sex, after bearing regular harassment over a period of one-and-half-year I was sent back to my home by my in-laws, as I objected against the treatment I got there.”

The complainant informed that after she was sent home, the relatives of her husband approached her relative in order to sort out the matter. She said, “In February 2017, they called us to one of their relatives home to resolve the issue, but during discussion, my husband was furious and told me that he is giving me divorce by pronouncing talaq three times. After a few months, he sent me a notice that he has given me divorce by pronouncing ‘talaq’ three times and I should accept it. Only after that, I decided to fight the case and replied to the notice and also registered a FIR against him and my in-laws.”

As per the information provided by the complainant, she has been threatened by her husband in the past as well to withdraw the case against him. “He threatened to attack me twice with acid if didn’t withdraw the case but I didn’t submit to his demand. On Tuesday, when I came to court to appear for the hearing, he met me in the court premises and urged me to take the case back, as he will be behind the bars because of the triple talaq law. However, when I didn’t agree and turned around to leave, he attacked me and poured some liquid substance over me. Initially I thought it was acid but it was petrol.”

After attacking the complainant, the accused Sohail Khan was trying to escape from the court premises but was detained by police. Karim Shaikh, father of the complainant, said, “My daughter has suffered a lot, we even tried to resolve issues with them but such people don’t believe in living peacefully. Now, by making an attempt to burn my daughter in court premises, he has crossed all limits.”

Shivajinagar police have registered a case against the accused under relevant sections of IPC.
