Man attempts to set wife on fire for filing divorce petition

PUNE: A 38-year-old woman had a narrow escape after her husband allegedly tried to set her on fire for filing a petition for divorce. The woman had filed for divorce after she was fed up with his harassment.

As per the FIR lodged by the woman, the incident took place at around 2.45 pm on Friday in front of teachers and students at the school in Narhe where she teaches. Sinhgad road police has charged her 39-year-old husband for offences under sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC.

According to police, they had got married in 2008 and have two children. Since 2014, he had an extra marital affair and had told her about it. He had started beating her up and would take money from her for alcohol. Since June 2017, she had been living separately from her husband with her two children. She had earlier filed several complaints against him with Saswad police station. Later, she moved the Pune court for domestic violence and compensation.

Police officials said that the accused went to her school on Friday and yelled at her in front of students in the class. He was furious that she did not go for the hearing in the court, as he wanted a compromise. However, the woman told him that she does not want to live with him.

Enraged by this, he poured petrol on her from the bottle, which he had carried, and tried to throw burning matchsticks on her twice but she managed to run away. After hearing the commotion, other teachers intervened and called the police.
