The alleged desecration of the memorial on December 29 and a case against 49 people are said to be the reason for riots in Koregaon-Bhima, Sanaswadi, on January 1, when lakhs of people had gathered at Vijaystambh to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the battle of Koregaon-Bhima.

After this, special judge Prahlad Bhagure granted bail to seven arrested persons in the case. They were released on Rs 15,000 bond and the condition that they will not return to the village for the next seven days. They had been charged for offences under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
